A nuclear medicine technologist (NMT) is a healthcare professional who specializes in using radioactive materials for diagnostic imaging and treatment, requiring specific education and certification.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Administer Radiopharmaceuticals: NMTs prepare and administer radioactive drugs (radiopharmaceuticals) to patients. These substances help in imaging and treatment by highlighting specific areas of the body during scans. 
  2. Operate Imaging Equipment: They use specialized imaging equipment, such as gamma cameras and PET scanners, to capture images of the radioactive material in the patient's body. This helps in diagnosing conditions like cancer, heart disease, and other disorders. 
  3. Patient Interaction: NMTs explain procedures to patients, ensuring they understand the process and addressing any concerns. They monitor patients during imaging to ensure safety and comfort. 
  4. Image Analysis: After capturing images, NMTs evaluate the results and ensure they are properly documented for physicians to interpret. 
  5. Maintain Equipment: They are responsible for the maintenance and calibration of imaging equipment to ensure accurate results and safety.
